What is Grade 80 Steel?
Grade 80 steel is a high-strength reinforcing steel bar (rebar) primarily used in reinforced concrete structures where higher load capacity, reduced congestion, and improved durability are required.
It offers a minimum yield strength of 80,000 PSI (550 MPa), which is significantly higher than Grade 60 steel.
Applicable Standards
Grade 80 steel is manufactured and tested according to internationally recognized standards:
| Standard | Description |
|---|---|
| ASTM A615 / A615M | Deformed & plain carbon-steel bars for concrete reinforcement |
| ASTM A706 / A706M | Low-alloy steel bars for seismic & weldable applications |
| ISO 6935-2 | Reinforcing steel for concrete (international use) |
Mechanical Properties of Grade 80 Steel
| Property | Value |
|---|---|
| Minimum Yield Strength | 80,000 PSI (550 MPa) |
| Minimum Tensile Strength | 100,000 PSI (690 MPa) |
| Elongation (min.) | 7% – 9% (size dependent) |
| Strength Ratio (TS/YS) | ≥ 1.25 |
These properties ensure high load-bearing capacity and structural reliability.

Chemical Composition (Typical Range)
| Element | Percentage (%) |
|---|---|
| Carbon (C) | ≤ 0.30 |
| Manganese (Mn) | 0.60 – 1.50 |
| Silicon (Si) | ≤ 0.50 |
| Sulfur (S) | ≤ 0.045 |
| Phosphorus (P) | ≤ 0.045 |
Controlled chemical composition improves weldability, ductility, and corrosion resistance.
Available Sizes
Grade 80 steel bars are produced in a wide range of diameters to meet project requirements.
| Metric Size (mm) | Imperial Size |
|---|---|
| 10 mm | #3 |
| 12 mm | #4 |
| 16 mm | #5 |
| 20 mm | #6 |
| 25 mm | #8 |
| 32 mm | #10 |
| 40 mm | #13 |
Manufacturing Process
Grade 80 steel is commonly produced using:
Electric Arc Furnace (EAF)
Thermo-Mechanically Treated (TMT) process
Controlled cooling for high strength & ductility
Ribbed surface for excellent concrete bonding
Summary (For Project Use)
Grade 80 reinforcing steel provides superior strength, durability, and cost efficiency, making it ideal for modern high-load and seismic-resistant concrete structures. Manufactured according to ASTM standards, it ensures excellent bonding, controlled ductility, and long-term structural performance.
